Watercolor for enamel on copper poppy vase by Patricia Gay
This watercolor drawing is a design for an enamel-on-copper vase decorated with poppies. The floral decoration, of course, is typical of Tiffany’s nature-based designs.
In 1898, Tiffany set up a small enamel department in Corona, Queens, New York. The staff in the early years consisted of a small number of young women artists, including Patricia Gay, the maker of this watercolor. Gay signed this design “Miss Gay”; she also added to it the date “May 11, 1900”. That same year, Tiffany debuted the department’s achievements at the Exposition Universelle in Paris.
“EL” is penciled in on the upper left corner, one of two letter combinations used to label enamels.
