- Previewing the Glass Facade
The facade of the contemporary gallery building will be made up of large white panels of glass, which are being manufactured by Thiele in Germany. In February, mock-ups of the panels were made in order to test final fabricated components.
The goal of the mockup was to make sure the windload hooks on the back of the glass properly engaged the windload channel pins mounted to the stud wall. Images from the testing give a glimpse into the installation process that will take place here in Corning later this summer, when the panels will be placed on the facade.
Mockup frame is assembled with plywood backing and vertical wind load channels.
The glass is brought outside the factory using a specialized trailer.
A glass vacuum lifter, with its suction cups wiped clean, is used to lift the bottom panel of glass into place.
Windload hooks are checked for proper engagement onto the windload channel pins.
The upper panel is hoisted into position.
