New Publications From The Corning Museum of Glass

As the world’s foremost authority on glass, the Museum annually offers publications on the history, technology, and art of glass and glassmaking.

This year’s new publications include Glass Beads: Selections from The Corning Museum of Glass, highlighting 50 beads and beaded objects from the Museum’s collection; New Glass Review 34, featuring 100 new contemporary sculptures, vessels, and other works in glass by emerging and established artists in 2012; and Notable Acquisitions 2012 , which celebrates important acquisitions made to the permanent collections of the Museum and the Rakow Research Library throughout the year.

Glass Beads: Selections From The Corning Museum of Glass

This colorful book provides a brief overview of the bead collection at The Corning Museum of Glass, from the second millennium B.C. to the present. Fifty of the finest beads or beaded objects at the museum are present in this volume. All of these pieces are included in the exhibition Life on a String: 35 Centuries of the Glass Bead (May 18, 2013-January 5, 2014). This book will serve as a companion to that exhibition. While it is not intended to be an exhaustive survey on beads, this book is an assessment that may inspire the reader to seek more information in the specialist literature on beads. 87 pages; softcover

New Glass Review 34, 2013

For more than three decades, The Corning Museum of Glass has published the annual New Glass Review as a survey of jury-selected works in glass submitted by artists from around the world. This volume features 100 important contemporary sculptures, vessels, and other works in glass by emerging and established artists from October 1, 2011, to October 1, 2012. Works from outside the selection process that impressed jurors are shown, too. Also included are jurors’s statements and recent acquisitions of contemporary glass objects. 128 pages; softcover.

The Corning Museum of Glass: Notable Acquisitions 2012

Notable Acquisitions 2012 is the fourth in a Corning Museum of Glass publication series that celebrates the 50 most important acquisitions made during the course of the year, both for the glass collection and for the Rakow Research Library. The works entered the collection either by purchase or by gift. The objects are presented in chronological order, accompanied by a brief commentary on their significance and, in most instances, related bibliography.

Some of the highlights of the year include a portrait inlay of Akhenaten (Egypt, about 1353–1336 B.C.); a beautifully designed inlaid bowl with Nilotic scene (Roman Empire, fourth to fifth centuries); a claret jug and stopper, possibly made by Thomas Webb and Sons, engraved by William Fritsche (about 1880–1900); various drawings relating to Louis Comfort Tiffany, two of which are by Leslie H. Nash; a six-panel Fresnel lighthouse lens (fourth order) manufactured by Macbeth-Evans Glass Company, about 1912; and works by Richard Marquis, Harvey Littleton, Ann Gardner, and Ivan Mareš. 79 pages; 70 color illustrations.
